Howes Great London Circus 1921

Clyde Beatty seen here with his hand upon the head of an Hippopotamus. I believe at that time he worked as a animal handier. I wonder if he ever thought that he would become a great animal trainer and own one of the largest circuses in America.

Howe;sI had two great uncles who worked for the greater London’s show, and Ringling circus
this was in the early 1900’s . One great uncle was killed on the streets of NY on Oct. 30, 1916, As far as I know he was still employed at that time by Howe;s. He was 25 yr. old at his death. I am just interested in history , and was pleased to see a website for Howe’s Greatest London Circus. Thanks
Clyde Beatty joined out on Howes Great London, in Washington Court House, Ohio, on August 16, 1921. He is in the route book that year as a cagehand under Louis Roth, who was on loan for a time from the Barnes show. This made Roth Beatty’s first teacher. The nexr season, Roth returned to Barnes, and Beatty continued his apprenticeship under John C. “Chubby” Guilfoyle and his wife, Hattie. The clown in the photo has been identified to me as Abe Goldstein. I’ve seen the hippo identified as a very young Lotus, who became the circus world’s most famous hippo.
transcribing my grandmother’s handwritten diary. On Saturday April 16, 1921 she and the family she was employed with attended the “Howes London” circus. Her diary entry reads, “It was real good”
