C.R. Montgomery Circus
Posted By thecircusblog on September 14, 2013
My aunt Bertha took this photo in the mid to late 1930’s. Snow is dreaded in our business. Luckily in this instance, the big top was not up. There is nothing a circus can do but wait for it to dry out if you are setting up. Or you can head for the next town where weather is better. If you wait too long the show can and will change time and show dates, that have already been set in advance. I have been caught in the snow a few times. If the big top is up it and it snows, it is bad for the tent. We had to take the tent down slowly in sections, then sweep the snow and ice from it, and then hand roll the canvas. When we got to the next town the first thing we did was roll out and stretch the top to dry as much as possible before lacing and pulling the peeks.

C,R, Montgomery later went on to become part of the staff on Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He had a lot to do with the selling of many of the surplus animals after the 1956 under canvas closing.
