Before unloading the trucks are tested to make sure that they will start. Sometimes they were primed with gas to start and warm up. On a long trip the fuel could evaporate. 1932.

I talked with my good friend and Ringling historian, Steve Flint, last night about this photo. The Mack truck in the center is followed by one of the Pierce Arrow Trucks. Thus the difference in appearance.
