Prince & Joe Anderson #1

This photo was taken in 1898. I was able to get some info, but most was vague information that was on the negative envelope. It’s written that Joe Anderson was killed by this elephant called Prince. I found another negative which is on the next post. There was no info on it as well or the name of the circus.

This elephant was on Ben Wallace’s Great Wallace Circus. Having been on the Wallace shows since 1889, he killed Joe Anderson in Racine, WI on June 3, 1898 and was destroyed a month later.

There was an article in the Racine Journal Times yesterday about Joe Anderson’s grave finally receiving a headstone, after being unmarked for more than 110 years – thought you might be interested. Article has some background information, as well. Evidently Joe was a nickname, because the headstone also lists his name as John M. Anderson.
