Another Muddy Lot!

Another “Muddy Lot” I believe taken in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The “Mud Shows” derived their names from the lots that they played on…..either a farmer’s field, a vacant lot outside of town or anything they could find to set up the show. A few free tickets and a good handshake was all it took to rent a piece of property for the day. There was no such thing as a paved parking lot in a shopping center or a civic arena. When it rained you had mud! But the show still went on. Grandfather often said….”when it’s tough for everybody else ….it’s just right for me.” Harry Quillen reproduced this photo from a tin type. The original was taken in 189o…………. J.E. Henry’s Big Show. The man on stilts above the wagon is my grandfather. At this time the show only had a two pole big top with one ring.
