Henry Kyes was my great uncle, my grandfather’s brother. My grandfather was L. Kent Kyes. I met Henry 4 or 5 times when the circus came to our hometown, Springfield, IL. Our dad took us to see him.
I saw Maestro Kyes with Polack Bros. in Seattle in the 1960s. He impressed me as a man of great dignity and experience, a real old-time trouper. His repertoire was a nice mix of “traditional” circus tunes and nicely-arranged modern pop, and the bands (about 15 pieces, which he conducted in the darkened arena with a penlight) sounded great. A good memory!
