Joe Barrera

Joe Barrera was called Mexican Joe and was featured on the Miller Bros 101 Ranch Show 1908, where he was a trick rider and roping stunts. In 1945 Joaquin Sanchez appeared in the new addition of the 101 produced by Jimmy Woods. Joaquin Sanchez was the Mexican vaquero in the show performing trick riding and roping. Sanchez also was an actor in the silent movie era and a very good actor at that, but when the talkies came out he did not do well as his English was not good. He later went into performing in the circus and rodeos. Somewhere in my mothers old photos is a photo of Joaquin, When found I will post. Joe Berrera was also featured with Pawnee Bills Wild West show. His first season started in 1901, I was reminded of this by a circus blog visitor, Thank you.

Unfortunately we cannot learn all that we want but this could help me to make my knowledge puzzle 🙂 which actually is never ending story.
I knew José Barrera. He was Gordon Lillie’s ranch foreman in Pawnee, Oklahoma until Lillie (aka Pawnee Bill) died in 1942. As Mexican Joe he was a feature on Pawnee Bill’s show for several seasons. Didn’t know he ever travelled with the Miller Bros.101. Are you sure about that? Please educate me on that.

Hello Roel,
I don’t think Joe would have had any grandchildren named BARRERA, as only his daughter lived to adulthood. Here’s an excerpt from a credible article:
In 1905 José Barrera married Effie Cole. Effie became a star in her own right. Her specialties were hurdle jumping, piloting four horses in a chariot race, the High School Horse Act, and the Western Ballet. The couple had two children, one who died in infancy and a daughter, Mary.
His daughter Mary, Married Clyde Heston. They had one son, name Robert. Who would be Jose grandson. He and I grew up together. We all grew up around Quay, Oklahoma. When we would go to Pawnee for supplies we always went by Joe’s for a visit and a ride around the ranch on his spotted horse. (5/6 kids on the old horse)
My uncle Pete Cantrell was shot and killed on the road to the entrance of the Pawnee Bill’s ranch house.
