This was taken in August 1968, around back of “My String” of 12 cages at Jungleland. The last two, 11 and 12, were reserved for the mother, Emir, and the four litters she delivered there. The green panel is the blind I hung in the front screen to shield mother and cubs from the sun for their first 30 days, and from loud, nosy idiots both of the public and from our own front office. Mabel Stark guided me day by day on cub rearing, and we fought the office over them, as they wanted to grab the newborns out for photos even before their first nursing. We won, but the hard feelings over having to defeat the office’s ignorance remained. The cubs grew up well, and two years later I began their schooling. Mabel was gone by then, but her lessons were, and are, indelible. I, incidentally, still look the same as you see me here.
