Siebrand Bros Circus & Carnival

Hike, Pete and Sam Siebrand owned one of the largest combined circus and carnivals in the north and southwest.  Some of the following photos date back to the late 1800’s and into the 1960’s.  In the beginning the Siebrands were farmers and never dreamed that they soon would be in show business. If it wasn’t for a small carnival that set up on some of their land to play the near by town, Siebrand history would have never been made. The carnival had a bad season that year and their bad luck continued in Northwood, North Dakota where the Siebrands lived. The carnival played a blank and could not pay for the spot. The carnival owner told the Siebrand family that he would leave a ride in good faith and would return and pay them what he owed. He never returned and the Siebrands now owned a Flying Jennie, a type of Merry Go Round that has no platform that you walk on. The horses hang from poles that fly out when the ride turns. And that is how the Siebrand Circus and Carnival started. The story continues in the following posts.  Photos supplied by Tammy Ree, great granddaughter of the Siebrand family…….SEE Approved Comment.

Thank you Diana Siebrand for your comment.

The Siebrand Carnival Begins

To continue the story written in the first portion of this group of photos……. The Flying Jennie horse ride was now owned by the Siebrands and they would set it up from time to time when there was a home town celebration, and they would give free rides. One of the Sieband sons got the idea that if you took the Jennie to another town they might pay to ride the flying horses. It became so popular they created a small summer route. Then the brothers sold the Jennie and bought this merry go round that is in this photo. More people ….more money,  there was no stopping them now.

The Circus Came to Siebrand’s Midway

In the early 1930’s, the Siebrands put a circus on the back of the carnival. It was free and did it ever draw the crowds. There was no Big Top,  just center poles for the aerial rigging as seen here and a circus back drop and awning for a seven piece band. It was a complete show and shown in segments lasting 30 minutes starting every hour and fifteen minutes. This would keep the people moving round the midway. There were 5 to 8 shows daily each one different. Holding a tip makes money, but you have to give the public good entertainment and Siebrand Bros Circus and Carnival did.
