In the photo is Slim Lewis under the tusks of Ziggy. Fortunately he escaped from the wrath of this elephant. This bad attitude is often brought on when male elephants are in musk.

I thought I would put into the circus blog a little history. Show business encompasses many facets and it’s easy to forget some of our grass roots. I personally would have loved to see a Minstrel Show.

The Minstrel show was an important part in the circus and vaudeville world. Many performers from both stage and arena came from minstrel shows.

My grandfarther James Edward Henry did minstrel when he was a young man. He told my father that he did black face and sang in a group of others. He did not perform with the Primrose Minstrel Show.

As I wrote before about my grandfather working as a minstrel, I forgot to mention that my great grandfather,Edmond Henry, in his older years did minstrel also. Neither James Edward Henry nor Edmond Henry were performers with the Primrose Minstrels in this photo. Instead, they performed on a river boat along the Missouri and the Mississippi . These shows were very small with maybe only 10 or 12 performers.

Yvette was a southern California based act. She had two or three different animals acts and did very well . Her acts were clean and could be worked anywhere. The last time I saw Yvette was in 1959.

I just found this old article and I think it is important that I post it. May we never forget our fellow performers.

I never met these artists….. maybe someone out there in the circus world might have a little information about them.
