Mabel Stark

This Photo was taken during one of her a performance at Jungleland. Mabel did two shows a day every day except Mondays. I think she may have been the oldest working trainer in the business. Photo shot in 1967.

Parley Baer gave a set of Mabel’s wardrobe, including this pair of boots, to the circus museum, in Peru, Indiana. I have her trunk, and 3 1/2 sets of her uniforms, which were special made for her by DeMoulin Bros. of Greenville, Illinois. The company is still in business. This 1967 photo was taken during Mabel’s last year to work. By her recollection, she had started on Thursday, October 12, 1911, joining out in Venice, California winterquarters, on Al. G. Barnes Circus. When she was turned out of Jungleland, by company politics, I helped her take care of her tigers on the last day of her career–Friday, November 10, 1967. She was found dead of suicide on Saturday, April 20, 1968. She was 79.
