I am a native of Culver City, the home to MGM Studios, Hal Roach, and others, and a nephew of the late Bella Cohen, who was a close friend of Mr. Learmont from his downtown LA parking lot operations. Bella took me to Mr. Learmont’s farm in the early 50’s when I was just 4 or 5 and did her own double take when I walked under the elephant! To me it was just the right size, like some of the crawling areas on Tom Sawyer island at Disneyland, which I later saw around 1957..
I believe the elephant was called Lucy (note the “L” on its forehead) and she later did a stint at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park.
