Some time ago I wrote about my aunt Bertha and her Iron Jaw act which she learned and preformed on her father’s circus, “The J.E Henry Big Show.” In those early years she was a feathered attraction. She carried on with her act on other circuses after grandfather closed his circus show in the mid 1940’s. The interesting thing about Bertha’s iron jaw act was she had false teeth, both upper and lower…… unbelievable but true. I want to thank Mike Pilla for this photo along with the others that he sent. Mike and David are the sons of Jimmy and Dolly Conner.

Bertha and her Hollywood K9s. A little side note. My grandmother Mable Chase Fairbanks Henry and Bertha had a home in El Monte. Calif. They bought the home soon after J.E. Henry’s death in 1945. Bertha watched over Mable Henry as she was failing. In 1949 My parents bought the house next door. It made it much easier for Bertha, as my mother helped out in the care of Mable. After my grandmother passed away, Bertha sold the house and moved to Gainesville, Texas. I miss her fried chicken to this day. She was a wonderful cook.

Bertha’s dog act. There is not a Henry that didn’t have a dog act or a pony act, among all of the other acts that they had. I guess it comes from the old style Dog and Pony circus.
