Free Circus

Free CircusIn finding these ads I am suprised that most of them,  like this one,  I do not remember doing the show. It had to be some time around 1959. Dad was booking one day events all over Southern Calif. He had that circus attitude, keep moving on to those one day spots, “keep the money coming in.”

We had so many animals to feed and often times the animals would eat first.  Our overhead was too high so there had to be a change.  Dad started selling many of the animals and we focused our attention towards the chimps act. This became our money maker.

A True Republican

Shorty Republican           In 1976 I was asked if I would bring Shorty to the Republican headquarters. They did an advance promo saying that one of the largest Republicans would host those who came to register that day.

The Midas Circus

SCAN1679It was a one day gig just a few miles away from winter quarters….. “How sweet it was”.  If I remember correctly one of the owners of the Midas shop was from the Christiana family.

Looking For Talent

Posted By on April 5, 2014

SCAN1672When you have a low budget and need entertainment, I found that if you promote local talent that is only looking to get recognized, and mix them with professionsals, the result is quite entertaining. My success was setting apart Sundays  for what I called in my promo “Feasts Mexicana.” I never had a bad weekend.  I continued to always throughout  my show producing years to always have a Sunday that was dedicated to our Latin friends.

Love A Fair

Posted By on April 5, 2014

Maricopa 1977 #2Yes it is true,  the title of our Maricopa  County Fair was “Love A Fair “.  It was was somewhat controversial but it worked. Tom Ringhofer,  the manager of the fair came up with the title . There was more than one person that thought it was not in good taste but Tom stuck to his guns and the county fair was successful. I was the person that came up with the idea to book C.W. McCall only because of his new release “Convoy”. CB radios were very popular in those days and especially among the truckers.  They all knew and were a big fans of C.W. McCall….. so on the day of his arrival at the Phoenix airport I got on the CB and announced that C.W. was coming to town for the Maricopa Fair and he needed a convoy to the fair grounds. I will say this, for the first time in my life I was truly afraid that I had over did it. Truckers from all over the state came to escort C. W. from the airport to the fair grounds. It was a good stunt but did cause a problem with traffic control and the police wanted to know who was responsible. So like a good promoter I dummied up.  PS…C.W. McCall rode to the fair in a diesel not a limo.

No one till this day knows who pulled off the biggest day of the Maricopa County Fair….a convoy of trucks and people.

Look What I Got PaPa

Jack2This is my grandson Jack Henry.  He proudly holds a Ringling poster glued to broad or section cut away from a sign. His mother Kathy Henry found two of these at a local swap meet. Who ever was the original owner took the time to round the edges of the wooden back and was very gentle with the poster. When I spoke to Jack about these posters he said, ” I am starting my own circus collection with my sister Katie “. It is a good thing to know that your grandkids have pride and  interest in their background…………. The Circus.
