Senor Leonardo

He not only was a fine ventriloquist, but he had another talent. During World War Two as he entertained all over Europe, He did espionage for the US. Who would think that a ventriloquist could gather information for Uncle Sam? He did and it was vital information. After the war in 1945, Leonardo came to the States and continues hie profession as a fine ventriloquist. In December of 1946 is when we met him on a variety show in Los Angeles, Calif. George B. Hunt was the big agent at that time in Los Angeles and booked most of the winter dates. Senor Leonardo after a few years went back to his country Spain. We never heard nor saw him again. This photo is the only memory that I have of him.

I was director of entertainment for the National Date Festival, Indio, Calif. My job included special events, advertising and promotions. I needed a headliner for the Fair’s annual parade. I hired Dennis Day for the job as well as a master of ceremonies for special shows. The Fair had a great run.

This photo was taken mid 1930’s, The Siebrand Circus had a small two pole tent. In 1947 Dad built the stage.

The pitch began “For the price of only fifty cents you will see ten big acts…YES TEN of the strangest people born to God’s green earth, each one will perform for you, and amaze you!They are waiting for you now on the inside so hurry get your tickets here to the left and right of me. Hurry, hurry it’s show time.” And then the base drum would start again….to this day I remember the rhythm of that drum.
