This was a close call for Alfred. During a performance two of his leopards got into a fight and Alfred tried to brake them up without success. There is an old saying, “never get between the cats during a fight” as bad things can happen as you see here. I know for a fact that our animals come first and you will do just about anything to keep them from harms way. Their well being is as important to them and to you the trainer. The act comes first even before ourselves. They are our livelihood and our responsibility. This photo of Alfred was taken on the Ringling show 1940.

Olga Celest was known as “The Leopard Woman”. Most of Olga’s training and performing took place at the Los Angeles Zoo in the 1920’s and 1930’s. She also trained a few animals for motion pictures. Her lead leopard seen here is ” Big Otto”. This photo was taken at the zoo arena which was a permanent stage and a holding area for the cats.

Mabel had her own arena in the back area at Jungleland. Her arena was set up on the ground as she liked working on what she was used to. The main arena where all the other trainers worked their cats was on a cement stage and the audience seats were in a half circle in front of the arena. Mabel’s favored the old style circus arena. Photo was taken in 1962 at Jungleland.

Trina and Danny DuVal later in their life had to make some changes as their hand balancing act became harder to perform. Danny broke in his grandson to do the act and Trina produced her own marionette show. She was a big hit on the Christmas shows………We do survive don’t we?
