The last time I saw Doug was in 1979 when I was managing Legend City Amusement Park and I went to visit the Shrine Circus. Hubert Castle had the date and Doug was on the show. We had a great time cutting up jack pots of years past. He and his wife had a fast and funny act. I spoke to him about doing a few weeks at the amusement park later that season, but the timing was bad and things did not work out. I never saw my friend again…. sometimes our business is cruel because it separates friends. Read Comment.

Doug was funny on and off stage. His talent was old school and he knew all the gags. There was never a dull moment around him. He and his family came to the US from Australia. His brother Dingie was also a fine performer and a comedian.

In this photo, Frank is demonstrating his skill with bull whips as Bernice holds the target. They also did rope spinning and were featured in many circuses and rodeos. They were a great couple. As I have said before, I learned many rope tricks from Frank Dean which I in turn put into my act on the rolling globe.

I admired this woman and her animal training skills immensely. The way she moved in the arena around the tigers was sheer poetry. I saw her last performance at Jungleland, Thousand Oaks, CA.

Rudy Jacobe produced hundreds of outdoor circuses in city parks to baseball diamonds. He never owned a circus tent or any circus animals…but he was a great promoter & producer. Many great circus acts and circus owners got their start with Rudy.
