Ray and Dorothy

At Bill Capell’s winter quarters there was always a merry go round to be repaired and Ray Barber was there to paint it.  Dorothy Capell always made sure it was done right.

In 2004 Ray Barber and Bill Capell came to visit me at the Maricopa County Fair. As always we had a lot of stories to tell each other and most of them we told each other a hundred times before.

Shorty & the Reporter

1978, Ratoone, NM. Henry Bros circus,  We were just getting ready for a performance when a newspaper reporter tried to take a picture of Shorty. Every time he would begin to take a picture, Shorty would nuzzle his forehead. Thus the above picture.

What an elephant man! He inspired other elephant trainers to do their very best. This photo was taken on Pollock Bros. Circus.

In the mid 50’s, Dad had Pan American Amusement Corp. The show was designed as a community fair and was very successful. They were playing Oxnard, CA and on set up day this man asked if he could set up a booth to educate people about the farm labor program. All he did was hand out pamphlets. My Dad liked him because of his demeanor and gave him a good location on the midway………… There was no charge. Dad had a deep respect for the hard working man.

Baron Von Yule

In 1966 on the Hubert Castle International Circus, we performed at the Shrine Circus in Flint, Michigan. Baron had a lot of problems with his cats, some had never been in the arena before. He asked me to help him in breaking these cats. It took us about 2 weeks to calm them down so he could start putting together a performance. Throughout the years he has developed a very good cat act.

Standing on the outside of the arena is no other than Mr. Al Mall the owner of the circus.

The Russ Saunders Trio

I first met Russ when he and Paula were doing the teeter board act with Ted DeWayne. This act is another example of circus performers having the opportunity to go  into the circus business because of Ted DeWayne. I will add, all were successfulin what they did as performers. Just to mane one of the greats, Fay Alexsander.
