Show Biz Dictionary: “Ragout the Top”

Ragout the Top:  After the Big Top was in the air and all the peaks were pulled, a group of 6-10 men would walk along the stake line and take hold of the pull ropes, tugging at them to tighten the tent to the stakes. The rhythm was: “take a rope, hold it tight, hit it, jerk it, pull it, down stake it, all right, walk along.”  The group would then go to the next pull rope.

Siebrand Bros. 1949.  It wasn’t a circus act, but this part of the show was very popular.  Frank and Danita Roche produced the dance group. They are found in the center of photo.
