This is a rare photo of a trainer being taken down by one of his cats. This European trainer was a little over confident and this is how mistakes are made…. and the out come is injury or death. In this case he got lucky with only injuries. The lion is stalled across the top of him, the only part of him seen is his forehead and bridge of his nose.

As I was told, ropes were thrown into the arena to confuse the lion and perhaps Barranco could take hold or roll into it and be pulled to the side door where they could be of more help. Luckily the cat was prodded off giving the cage men a chance to remove Barranco from the arena. His left arm was practically severed off from his shoulder.

In the hospital Barranco admitted his mistakes. He believed that because of a new costume change the cat did not recognize him as well as him pushing the routine little to hard. I do not know what part of Europe Barranco came from nor his full name. He most likely is Italian or Spanish. I am sure someone will make a comment. Here are some words of wisdom from from a great cat trainer. Clyde Beatty, said and wrote that. “Caution Was His Middle Name.”

When I received these photos from Donna Wally Wilbur it put me to thinking that this man could be related to Glen”Bones”Hartzell, who was a well known circus clown and had worked for all the major circuses in the early 1900’s, including Ringling Bros. In order to get a better handle on this I emailed Randall Hartzell, grandson of Glen”Bones”Hartzell and sent him what info I had on George Hartzell. Later Randall got back to me with his research and said that there were two Hartzell clowns working in the business around the same time but he thought they were not family related. So….. what I am hoping for now is more information on the “Millionaire Clown”.

George Hartzell is on the passenger side of the car. The other clown members names are unknown to me. Photo was taken on the Ringling show in the late 1920’s or early 30’s….. actual year unknown to me.
